Head-on collision in Somers claims life of elderly driver

A head-on collision in Somers claimed the life of an elderly woman and seriously injured three other people Saturday.

State police say the 80-year-old driver drove her Honda into oncoming traffic and crashed head on into a pick-up truck on Route 100. Somers firefighters used the Jaws of Life to try and save the driver of the Honda. Police say the woman died upon arrival at the Westchester Medical Center. All three people in the pick-up were seriously injured. Two were taken by helicopter to the hospital. All are expected to survive their injuries.

Accident investigators were on the scene to try and determine exactly how the collision happened and why the Honda veered into the oncoming truck.
