Yonkers Board of Education taps Pierorazio for superintendent

(12/21/05) YONKERS ? The Yonkers Board of Education looked within the district Wednesday to name Bernard Pierorazio the next superintendent of schools.

Pierorazio, who has been with the Yonkers school system for 31 years, had been serving as interim school superintendent since June. He takes over for former superintendent Angelo Petrone, who stepped down in the midst of a hiring scandal. Parents and teachers who attended the board meeting at Saunders High School seemed pleased by the board?s decision.

In a speech delivered after the vote, Pierorazio admitted he has some tough issues to tackle within the district. The new superintendent says he wants to fix budget problems and address the lack of a teachers? contract. The board unanimously approved Pierorazio's hiring.
