Pelham businesses suffer in wake of cliff collapse

A partial cliff collapse in Pelham Tuesday destroyed not only businesses but crushed holiday hopes.

A landslide sent boulders crashing down onto apartments and businesses along Fifth Avenue. Three places including Washington Mutual, which just opened its doors Monday, will have to be demolished. An owner of a photo shop was allowed into his store just long enough to grab envelopes with Christmas pictures and cards to deliver to his customers.

Many storeowners met with village leaders for answers on when they can resume their businesses. Village officials say engineers must deem the buildings safe before reopening.
