Black bear makes appearance in Port Chester

Police say they received a call from a Port Chester resident reporting the sighting of a black bear on Thursday.

Black bear sightings appear to be on the rise in Westchester. Police are concerned with the bear sighting in a heavily populated area like Port Chester. Experts say black bears are generally shy around people but when scared they can react and attack a domestic animal or human.

Port Chester police say their biggest concern is that a resident might shoot the bear, something they say would be extremely dangerous. Police ask anyone who spots the bear to call 911 and stay inside.
