Police chase in Mount Vernon ends in gunfire

A police chase on foot ended in gunfire in Mount Vernon Tuesday.

Two plainclothes narcotics officers spotted 26-year-old Dorien Gaines, who had an outstanding warrant, on East Third Street around 10 p.m. When officers approached him, he fled. During the foot chase, police say Gaines turned to officers brandishing a gun. Officers fired several times, hitting Gaines twice, once in the leg and once in the groin.

Gaines was taken to Westchester Medical Center and is listed in critical condition. He was wanted for intimidating a witness in an assault case and has a prior record that includes resisting arrest.
