Veterans Day ceremony canceled in Mamaroneck amid memorial controversy

For the first time in 60 years, a Veterans Day memorial ceremony has been canceled in Mamaroneck. The Kemper Memorial Park is located on the grounds of Mamaroneck High School and has been the subject of a long-running legal battle. The school wants to move the WWII memorial to expand its athletic field. The NY Court of Appeals ruled in September that the school can go ahead with proposed plans to move the memorial to another site on the property.
School officials wanted a $2 million liability insurance for the Veterans Day gathering. The Kemper Park Memorial Preservation says that would amount to $1,500 for a 15-minute ceremony on Saturday, which members say they cannot afford. Members of the group say asking for the liability insurance is a petty and vindictive move by the school board. School board members were not available for comment.
