Protesters want safety for all citizens
Community activists rallied at the Westchester County Office Building in White Plains Thursday afternoon, demanding an end to abuse in law enforcement practices.
Activists rallied on what would have been Dr. Martin Luther King's 86th birthday to ask elected leaders to help make a positive change in the community.
The activists say they are using King's birthday to call on Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino to strengthen the powers of the county's Civilian Review Board. They also want funds reinstated for the county's crisis intervention teams and demanded Astorino crack down on what they call countywide aggressive police policies toward people of color.
The activists tried to deliver a letter to Astorino outlining their concerns, but they never made it past the lobby.
Still, organizer Jalal Sabur vows that they will not give up fight to ensure everyone in the county gets a fair shake.
A spokesman for the county executive says he's looking forward to talking to anyone or any groups who have constructive ideas on how to improve community and police relations.
