Community rallies around military families after fire
The community is embracing two military families who were left homeless by a devastating fire.
Juliet Parker donated a car full of food and clothing Tuesday at the Stewart Terrace Community Center in New Windsor for the two families.
"Being a military spouse is when it affects one, it affects all," she said. "It doesn't matter if you've known each other."
National Guard Staff Sgt. Patrick Campbell and Marine Sgt. Wilmar Lopez -- both fathers of three -- lost everything when their attached homes on Sluga Drive in New Windsor went up in flames Monday afternoon.
Thousands of dollars have been donated to GoFundMe pages set up for the families, and officials at Stewart Air National Guard Base are showing their support.
"As many times as we're knocked down, the resilient spirit says, 'No, what I need to do is just get back up again,'" said Col. Bob Tilli, who is a chaplain at the base.
The cause of the fire appears to be accidental.
