Parishioners in Mount Vernon rallied today to save their church from closing.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church on Mount Vernon's South Side may close for good in September as the New York Archdiocese looks to cut costs and consolidate parishes.
A spokesperson for the Archdiocese says the process of identifying which churches it could possibly close began last September, and parishioners have had the opportunity to make their case.
Worshippers say they haven't had a fair chance to show the Archdiocese how much the church means to their community.
A petition effort is now underway with nearly 2,000 parishioners writing to Cardinal Timothy Dolan, urging him to save their church.
