Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed nearly a dozen laws today aimed at combating heroin abuse in New York.
Cuomo approved 11 heroin-related bills that the legislature passed before the 2014 session ended on Friday.
The measures include the creation of a new awareness campaign, stiffened penalties for dealers and improved treatment options for addicts. They also earmark money to provide the overdose drug Narcan to emergency responders statewide.
State public health officials say deaths from heroin overdoses in New York doubled from 2008 to 2012.
