Feds may crack down on navigation apps

The government could soon regulate your favorite navigation apps on your smartphone.
The Obama administration hopes to pass a transportation bill later this year that will let the National Highway Administration control navigation apps. The bill would give the agency the authority to set restrictions on the apps, the same way it currently regulates mechanical features of cars.
Most built-in navigation systems already mostly comply with voluntary guidelines, but smartphone apps represent a gray area in terms of regulation.
According to the DOT, a motorist should not take their eyes away from the road for more than two seconds. Obama hopes that this bill will help keep commuters safe.
