Chestnut Ridge neighbors remain stunned following the death of 5-year-old Garnett Spears and the murder charge for his mother Lacey.

Neighbors say they're still trying to come to terms with how a mother could allegedly commit such an act.

Chestnut Ridge is where police say Garnett Spears spent the last months of his life and where his mother allegedly poisoned the child with salt.

The Waldorf School, which Garnett Spears attended, issued a statement saying, "We are deeply, deeply saddened at Garnett's passing and continue to mourn the loss of this child. This is an unspeakable tragedy and we will continue to keep Garnett in our thoughts and prayers."
