Yonkers City Council approves $1B budget
The Yonkers City Council passed its $1 billion budget for 2015 early Wednesday morning with a vote of six to one.
Mayor Mike Spano's budget includes a savings of $9 million to the Board of Education by consolidation. Residents will also see a property tax rebate of $200 by keeping within the state tax cap. Vital services were not cut and $5 million was set aside in a contingency fund to hopefully give a raise to city firefighters.
The only council member to vote against the budget was Democrat Christopher Johnson. Johnson says he voted against the budget because he does not believe enough money was put toward education.
The budget goes into effect on July 1.
