Playing With Fire: Future of Ramapo’s private schools
While some Ramapo residents say they are happy about the demotion and suspension of their fire inspector, many wonder what the town is going to do about fire safety moving forward.
On Wednesday evening, the Ramapo Town Board demoted and gave a 60-day suspension to Fire Inspector Adam Peltz. Peltz is accused of ignoring safety code violations, including missing sprinklers, padlocked doors and broken exit signs during his visits to at least 19 local private schools.
A temporary replacement has been named for Peltz, and News 12's "Playing With Fire" investigations generated an order to the town from state officials to reinspect the private schools.
One yeshiva has been closed, but News 12 stopped by the town's Building Department to find out what the reinspections of other schools turned up. No one was available to speak.
Town Attorney Michael Klein says the town has moved ahead with a second look at those schools.
"We reinspected, or are in the process of doing another 19 and again, the report so far is, the rest of them have been completed and there are few problems with those that have otherwise been done," he said.
