Driver hit utility pole, bagel shop; charged with DWI

A car slammed into a utility pole and a bagel shop in Haverstraw Friday morning, leaving the surrounding community without power.

The incident occurred on Route 9W at about 1 a.m. The Holeshot Bagel and Deli was closed at the time of the crash.

Fire crews say live electrical wires were exposed in the roadway before the power was shut off.

The driver was identified as Anthony Bonfiglio, of Stony Point. He was ejected from his car during the crash and taken to Westchester Medical Center. Police say he was in critical condition.

Bonfiglio was charged with DWI.

There was no word on how long repairs to structural damage would take at the bagel shop. Nearby stores closed following the incident.
