Mount Vernon detective shoots fleeing suspect

Detectives in Mount Vernon shot a man in the leg Wednesday after he allegedly pulled a handgun on them.
Police say they were questioning Noel Smith, a 28-year-old Mount Vernon man, around 4 p.m. as part of a burglary investigation.
During the interview, officials say Smith fled on foot toward North 5th Avenue. Two detectives gave chase.
Smith entered an alleyway at 129 North 5th Ave., where he allegedly drew a handgun and pointed it at a detective.
Detective Nicholas Smith then shot the Smith in the right leg.
Police commissioner Robert Kelley says the suspect's criminal history includes a conviction for attempted murder in 2005.
Smith is also on parole for attempted murder. Officials say the gunshot injuries to his right leg are not life threatening.
