County task force unveils concussion safety plan

The Westchester County Concussion Task Force has unveiled its plan for increasing sports safety for high school boys and girls.

County Executive Rob Astorino, flanked by physicians and educators, is pressing the point that improvements are needed when it comes to the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related brain injuries.

The effort, called the 10 Best Practices plan, began in July for athletes playing at the high school and youth levels.

Supporters of the 10 Best Practices plan say that in addition to football players, cheerleaders and soccer, basketball and lacrosse players all face concussion risks when on the field.

Advocates say that it is purely coincidence that the film "Concussion" is putting a national spotlight on the issue - albeit for professional athletes - at the same time.
