Ex-police chief gets prison in child porn case

A former Mount Pleasant police chief has been sentenced to 18 months in prison followed by five years of probation after pleading guilty to possessing child pornography.

Brian Fanelli learned his fate Wednesday in federal court in White Plains. He wept as he told the judge how remorseful he was over what he did, acknowledging that he knew it was wrong.

Last year, he admitted to downloading more than 100 images and videos of child porn at his Mahopac home. Some of the files contained children believed to be under the age of 7.

Fanelli has spent the last two years confined to his home, and has received psychosexual counseling.

A police officer for 32 years, Fanelli held the title of police chief for just two months before being arrested in a sting by Homeland Security.

Fanelli is expected to surrender to prison in mid-April. He will have to register as a sex offender after his release.
