Sen. Murphy introduces bill on refugee crisis
Republican state Sen. Terrence Murphy is introducing new legislation in Albany that seeks a compromise in the Syrian refugee debate.
Murphy is proposing that, in addition to the federal government, New York closely screen all refugees entering the state. This would include performing all background checks and fingerprinting.
Murphy also wants the state Division of Homeland Security to monitor the refugees for potential terrorist activity until they are granted a green card.
He says his goal is to create a law that strikes a balance between humanitarian needs and security concerns.
