Woman dies in fire trying to save cat

A woman from Mount Kisco died Wednesday after going back into her burning home to save her cat.

County police say Chrystine Nicholas, 86, and George Nicholas, 93, woke up to the smell of smoke on the second floor of their home on 538 Main St. at around 6 a.m. They fled the house after seeing flames and went to a nearby gas station to call the fire department.

While the husband was making the call, he says his wife went to the house to retrieve a cat.

Nearly 75 firefighters battled the flames until they were able to find Chrystine Nicholas on the second floor. Crews say the cluttered home made the search difficult.

The couple was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital where Chrystine was pronounced dead. George suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Inside the home police discovered many more cats alive and seemingly unharmed.

A preliminary investigation says the probable cause of the fire was electrical.
