News 12 cameras ride with Metro-North engineers
Metro-North invited News 12 cameras for a ride on its Harlem line for an exclusive look from the engineers' perspective.
The Harlem line has the most rail crossings in the region -- including the one at Commerce Street, the site of the deadliest crash in Metro-North history.
In February, six people died when an Edgemont mother drove her SUV onto the tracks in Valhalla.
While the official report on the crash has not been finalized, the crash prompted the MTA to launch a new safety campaign.
According to MTA police, 41 summonses were issued at the crossing at Roaring Brook Road in Chappaqua to drivers trying to beat the crossing gates. Another 31 drivers received warnings.
In North White Plains on Virginia Road, drivers have been slapped with 51 summonses and 56 warnings, police say.
Officials say drivers need to respect the signs and barriers for their own safety and the safety of those aboard trains.
Additionally, Metro-North will use $34 million to purchase cameras that could provide another measure of safety and security.
