Flag returned to vet after theft is wrong flag
An Orange County military family whose irreplaceable American flag was stolen over the weekend is now saying the one returned overnight by a good-willed thief is the wrong flag.
The flag and a bird feeder were stolen Sunday from the yard of Army Maj. Walt Rittger and his wife, Elke.
The veteran, who lives on Florance Drive in Central Valley, took the original flag overseas with him on three tours of duty.
The stolen birdfeeder and the wrong flag were returned to their home after News 12 aired a story about the incident.
"As I'm unraveling it, I'm thinking this doesn't feel right, and then I went to hang it back up and I'm like this doesn't look right," says Walt Rittger.
Rittger says he understands the thief made a mistake, but he hopes his flag will be returned soon.
