More than 2 million spectators were estimated to fill the streets of Manhattan Sunday for the city's annual gay pride parade.
The parade took on special significance this year following the U.S. Supreme Court's historic ruling Friday on marriage equality.
Organizers are calling this year's march the most historic since the very first one more than 40 years ago.
More than 22,000 people are said to have walked the two-mile route down Fifth Avenue.
The march comes on the heels of Friday's 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court that gay and lesbian couples across the country have a constitutional right to marry.
To honor the ruling, Gov. Andrew Cuomo officiated a same-sex marriage before the parade in front of the Stonewall Inn. The bar is considered by many to be the birthplace of the gay rights movement.
