Group of local doctors heads to South America

Several doctors from Westchester and the Hudson Valley are leaving their suburban hospitals and traveling thousands of miles away to perform surgery on children born with birth defects.

The doctors are made up of 37 volunteers from Westchester and the Hudson Valley and are all part of the nonprofit group "Healing the Children."

Doctors say the deformities that the children have would interfere with speech and nutrition, but what's considered a simple operation in the United States isn't easy to come by for them.

In September, Healing the Children will send another team of volunteers to South America, this time to Colombia, to treat patients who have been severely burned.

The group relies on fundraising to support missions and get supplies.
