Catholic school teachers strike for a day
Teachers from several Catholic schools in the New York Archdiocese picketed outside the Saint Gregory Barbarigo School in Garnerville Friday as they seek a new contract.
The teachers say the archdiocese is engaged in unfair labor practices.
"The Archdiocese has seemed to have lost their mission," says teacher Sharon Mulrean. "We are the heart of the Catholic schools, and if the schools close, the Catholic religion is in big trouble."
The archdiocese says it has been in contract talks with the Federation of Catholic Teachers, the union which represents more than 2,600 Catholic school teachers.
Union officials say they expect to have similar protests at other schools in the coming weeks.
