Serial bride pleads not guilty to felony charges
A Bronx woman accused of being a polygamist has pleaded not guilty to felony charges.
According to prosecutors, 39-year-old Liana Barrientos has been married 10 times, starting with her first marriage in 1999.
Records show that most of Barriento's marriages took place in 2002, including those in Ramapo, Greenburgh, Mamaroneck and White Plains without her getting divorced.
Barriento's multiple marriages were discovered in 2006, when groom No. 8 was deported to Pakistan for making threatening statements toward the United States.
Officials believe she allegedly married the men to get them into the country. Bronx prosecutors say the statute of limitations has run out for charging Barrientos in connection with her many marriages.
Barrientos is believed to be currently married to four of her husbands, but was at one time married to eight at the same time.
Authorities say her husbands are from so-called "red-flagged" countries, which include Egypt, Turkey, Georgia, Pakistan and Mali.
Barrientos faces two counts of offering a false instrument for filing, and could be sentenced to up to four years in prison, if convicted.
