Roof collapses, damages cars
Crews are trying to figure out what caused the roof of an abandoned building in Ossining to collapse, swallowing four cars in the process.
Fire officials say they received the call at around 10 p.m. Tuesday for what appeared to be a sinkhole in the parking lot of 25 Croton Ave. When crews arrived, they realized the problem was actually a roof collapse.
Authorities say that a man in a taxi drove onto the private parking lot Tuesday night. He called police as the pavement began to buckle.
"The man stated the ground was sinking and the vehicle was sinking into the ground," said Detective Lt. William Sullivan, of the Ossining Police Department.
Police say the cold weather and heavy snow likely contributed to the ground giving way.
Village building officials are waiting for the insurance company of the parking lot to survey the damage before the cars can be taken out.
