Increased Mt. Vernon cop patrols in June

Mount Vernon Mayor Clinton Young walked through the city's west side with police officials yesterday to introduce residents to 'Operation Protect,' a project designed to curb summer crime by bringing increased police patrols to the neighborhood for the next month.

'Operation Protect' has been implemented in two other neighborhoods, one of which saw a 50 percent drop in crime after the plan was put into place.

In addition to a heavier police presence, residents living between Mount Vernon Avenue and West 1st Street should also expect periodic car detours over the course of the next month.
