Gas leak prompts Port Chester Police Dept. evacuation

The building which houses the Port Chester Police Department was evacuated earlier today due to a natural gas leak.

Workers were at the department this morning to remove contaminated soil. Officials say an excavator hit a gas main behind the building on 350 N. Main St., prompting Con Ed to clear the building, temporarily suspending all non-essential services.

Although the 911 access point remained open, all administrative and corporate functions were shut down. Officers transporting prisoners from the jail to the county court were ordered to turn around.

Con Ed has ventilated the building, and turned the gas off, but not yet revealed when it will go back on.
