Quick response quells Bronx River Road fire

Firefighters say a high-rise blaze in Yonkers nearly destroyed a building that houses hundreds of people.

Keith Ferreire, who works at a gas station feet away from 125 Bronx River Road, says he saw thick smoke coming from a sixth-floor window at around 3 p.m. and called 911. Dozens of firefighters responded to the scene within two minutes and stopped the fire in its tracks.

Fire officials say the fire was contained to the apartment where it started and that there were no injuries. One of the resident's cats needed oxygen, but survived.

The Red Cross is aiding the family displaced by the blaze.
