Firefighters say cuts threaten community safety

Yonkers fire officials say an overnight blaze in an apartment complex that houses hundreds could have been much worse if it had happened after a series of proposed cuts are scheduled to take effect.

Smoke poured out of 125 Bronx River Road last night, and with a gas station just around the corner, many eyewitnesses feared for the worst.

Firefighters were on the scene in less than two minutes and were able to extinguish the fire a short time after.

Firefighter's Union President Jose Caraballo says that proposed cuts to the department could've made for a very different outcome last night. "If this fire happened in July, and these proposed cuts had taken place ? this would've been a different story altogether."

Forty-four Yonkers firefighters could lose their jobs as part of a series of budget cuts in the city.
