Teen drowns in Lake Carmel during night swim

A 17-year-old boy drowned last week in the waters of Lake Carmel after going swimming with friends.

Police say Robert Cruz-Garcia was swimming with two 13-year-old friends at Beach 3 off of East Croton Drive in Kent at around 6 p.m. when his friends saw him go under the water without resurfacing.

First responders were unable to locate Garcia until the Mahopac Fall Fire Department Dive Team arrived an hour later, but by then it was too late.

Garcia was taken to the Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel, where he was pronounced dead.

Lifeguard Daniel Adelman says swimming season begins on the lake only at the end of June.
