Car in Saw Mill River snarls morning commute

Motorists on the Saw Mill River Parkway were probably just as confused as police this morning as to how a motorist wound up driving their car into the Saw Mill River on a clear, sunny day.

County police received a report of a car in the waters north of Executive Boulevard just after 7:30 a.m. They arrived to find that the driver was already outside of the vehicle and apparently uninjured.

Traffic was backed up for hours as police tried to figure out how the driver could have ended up down an embankment and in the hubcap-high waters.

The driver was taken to a hospital to be evaluated as a precaution.
