Body of soldier recovered after jump from Tappan Zee

Police have recovered the body of a 19-year-old female soldier from Shrub Oak who jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge this morning.

Police say the victim, Private Elizabeth Lynch-Gonzalez, drove onto the Tappan Zee Bridge at around 2:30 a.m., parked her car in the northbound lanes and jumped. A construction worker witnessed the incident and called 911.

Lynch-Gonzalez graduated from Lakeland High School last year. Her mother has been quoted as saying that her daughter was upset her deployment to Fort Hood in Texas had been moved up to today.

Grief counselors will be made available at Lakeland High School for students and staff coping with the loss of Lynch-Gonzalez.
