Paterson's emergency spending bill to cut $300M

(AP) - Gov. David Paterson is calling for more than$300 million in spending cuts in his latest emergency spendingbill, setting up a showdown Monday that could shut down stategovernment.

Paterson's bill was negotiated with legislative leaders throughFriday and more talks are expected over the weekend.

Democratic Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. said Friday he won't vote foranother emergency bill that cuts funding to the poor and needy inhis Bronx district. If he holds to that, the Senate's razor-thinDemocratic majority would need at least one rare Republicancrossover vote to pass the emergency spending bill and avoid anunprecedented shutdown.

But Republicans won't yet say if they will make up for Diaz andsupport the bill, or reject it.
