Con Edison transformer explodes in Yonkers

A Con Edison transformer has exploded in Yonkers this morning, sparking a fire and spreading potentially toxic smoke throughout the area, fire officials say.

The explosion happened at around 9:30 a.m. at a Con Edison substation at 81 Fullerton Ave. Firefighters are working at the scene to extinguish the blaze.

Con Edison is urging residents to stay indoors and close all windows and doors to prevent the smoke from seeping in.

The Red Cross says Mark Twain Middle School at 160 Woodlawn Ave. will be used as a staging area in case evacuations are necessary.
