Mt. Vernon students send shoes to Haitian orphans

Students at the Graham Elementary School in Mount Vernon are donating more than 400 pairs of shoes to an orphanage in Haiti through a humanitarian group.

Students collected the shoes yesterday to donate to the group Kids In Distressed Situations, who will actually distribute the donations.

The students were apparently inspired by an April "Barefoot Day" event, in which students actually went barefoot for several hours in school to imagine what being without shoes would be like.

School officials say they are already working on a similar project for next year, when they will choose a different country and give children shoes there.
