Paterson promises to push NY budget action this week

(AP) - Gov. David Paterson is promising more fiscalbrinksmanship a day after New York's Legislature averted anunprecedented shutdown of state government by adopting some of hisbudget cuts.

Paterson plans to offer budget legislation this week that wouldhelp close a multibillion dollar deficit by cutting spending forpublic safety, economic development and transportation.

If lawmakers fail to pass the bills, he said Tuesday he'llsubmit them again as part of his next emergency funding bill onFriday. Those bills have been used keep government running in theabsence of a budget since April 1.

That leaves lawmakers with three alternatives: negotiate budgetprovisions, approve the emergency bill or risk idling state workersand suspending nonessential services.
