Gen. Petraeus speaks at Purple Heart tribute in HV

Orange County native Gen. David Petraeus visited wounded veterans in New Windsor yesterday and delivered a keynote address at his alma mater, Cornwall High School.

Applause greeted Petraeus at a National Purple Heart Tribute in New Windsor. It was one of his first public appearances since being appointed by President Barack Obama to replace Gen. Stanley McChrystal as the top commander in Afghanistan.

Speaking to a full house, Petraeus didn't comment on the appointment, but humbly thanked veterans and Purple Heart recipients.

"Please know your stories will never be forgotten," he said.

The general's speech came two days after McChrystal resigned amid a scandal surrounding comments he and his aides had made to a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine.
