Garbage service reductions begin in Yonkers

Garbage service reductions began yesterday in Yonkers as part of the city's efforts to close a multimillion-dollar budget gap.

Garbage pickups have been reduced to one day a week. In addition, the city has discontinued curbside pickups of non-metal bulk items, including mattresses, furniture and scrap wood. Residents will have to take those items to the city's recycling center located at 735 Saw Mill River Road.

City officials are blaming the budget gap on a loss of revenues and cuts to the state budget.
