10 alleged Russian spies arrested in U.S.
Ten people, two living in Yonkers, have been arrested for allegedly serving as secret agents of the Russian government in the United States, the Justice Department said today.
FBI agents raided a home at 17 Clifton Ave. and arrested Vicky Pelaez and a suspect identified as "Juan Lazaro."
Details from an FBI report show the couple would take trips to Peru where they allegedly would exchange information with Russian operatives and return to the U.S. with thousands of dollars hidden in their suitcases as payment.
Each of the 10 people arrested was charged with conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison on conviction.
The arrests were the result of a multiyear FBI investigation into an alleged network of U.S.-based agents who concealed all connections between themselves and Russia, the Justice Department said.
AP wire services were used in this report.
