Deadline extended for Puerto Rican birth certificates

The Puerto Rican government has extended the deadline for its citizens who are living in the U.S. to reapply for new birth certificates.

Government officials say that current Puerto Rican birth certificates will be valid until Sept. 30 to give citizens enough time to apply and receive their new documents.

Birth certificates were due to expire on July 1 after it was discovered that the documents were improperly stored in Puerto Rico, leaving citizens' personal information open to identity theft.
