Son defends Yonkers couple facing spy charges

The son of a Yonkers couple accused of spying for and selling information to Russian operatives says that his parents are innocent and have never been to Russia.

A man known as Juan Lazaro and his wife, known as Vicky Palaez, are accused of taking trips to Peru to exchange information with Russian operatives and then returning with thousands of dollars hidden inside their luggage as payment.

The FBI wire-tapped the couple's home at 17 Clifton Ave. in Yonkers, and had been monitoring phone calls at the residence for several years.

The couple were part of a raid that included arrests in New Jersey, Massachusetts and Virginia.

All of the suspects are being considered flight risks, so no bail was set. They're due back in court Thursday. To watch interviews about the Yonkers couple's arrest in the Russian spy case, go to channel 612 on your digital cable box and select iO Extra.
