Yonkers to eliminate more than 400 school jobs
The Yonkers city school board approved the elimination of more than 400 jobs within the city's school system this week.
Two-hundred-eighteen of the positions set to be eliminated are current teachers and staff. The rest of the layoffs are retiring employees whose positions will not be replaced.
Pat Puleo, president of the Yonkers Federation of Teachers, says that the layoffs are the only way to keep the district from completely shutting down.
"It's very frustrating," Puleo says. "We've worked for months trying to get additional funds and the governor has really cut everyone off right at the knees."
Officials say 200 more in Yonkers could be eliminated if money from Albany is not restored.
