Garbage piling up in Yonkers with reduced pickups

The Yonkers DPW commissioner says that the recently reduced garbage pickup schedule is forcing his workers to enforce some long standing trash rules as garbage begins to pile up on Yonkers streets.

Pickup service in Yonkers was recently cut to just one day per week to help fight a growing budget deficit in the city. Fifty-two DPW jobs were also cut and there was a reduction in routes from 27 per day to just 16.

DPW Commissioner John Lizewski says that his workers are enforcing rules that may have been overlooked in the past, including rules that prevent workers from picking up garbage cans that weigh more than 50 pounds, or flimsy supermarket garbage bags.
