Hundreds of city workers set to be laid off in Yonkers

At midnight, hundreds of Yonkers firefighters, police and other city workers will be laid off due to the current budget crisis.

According to officials, pink slips have already been handed out to 197 city employees.

Last night's Yonkers Board of Education meeting ended with the elimination of 400 jobs, more than 200 of which are layoffs.

Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone is meeting with union leaders to find ways to reverse the layoffs. However, he says he can't increase property taxes more than 4 percent without the union pitching in.

The mayor could still submit an amended budget to the City Council and they could hold an emergency council meeting as early as tomorrow to save some jobs.
