Coyote spotted by off-duty Yonkers cop

An off-duty Yonkers police officer spotted a coyote near his residence last week and fired several shots at the animal, possibly striking it, before it got away.

Police say Sgt. Bryant Pappas noticed the animal at the corner of Chase and Park avenues at around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

Pappas fired twice at the coyote, causing the animal to yelp and change direction. Police were unable to locate the animal, but notified residents of the incident.

Local parents say they're concerned for the safety of their children and will keep them indoors at night.

The incident comes less than a week after coyotes attacked two girls in Rye just days apart.
