Yonkers begins taking away the trash

Department of Public Works crews were out this week picking up garbage in Yonkers that has been piling up because of the city's budget crisis.

The trash was supposed to be collected last Friday after the city switched to a once-a-week schedule because of the budget deficit. In many places, however, it wasn't picked up.

"They will get back on schedule. They will get it done," says Mayor Phil Amicone. "It may take us a week or two to get back. We will have a good one-day collection of garbage in this city."
