Rally held to protest Mount Vernon library cuts
Protesters gathered in front of Mount Vernon City Hall yesterday to rally against layoffs and demotions at the city's public library.
With a shortage of funds this year, 14 library workers have been laid off and another nine were demoted. Even before the budget ax fell last Friday, there were only about 25 people on the library's staff.
Library Director Opal Lindsay says the library's money problems are a reflection of tight times being faced by government entities across the state.
