Several businesses destroyed in White Plains fire

A five-alarm blaze in White Plains that had hundreds of firefighters rushing to the scene ended up destroying several businesses and sending more than two dozen firefighters to the hospital.

Investigators say the blaze originated in the basement of the Bengal Tiger Restaurant at 144 East Post Road at around 2:30 p.m.

Heavy black smoke and fast-moving flames could be seen from several blocks away as firefighters battled the inferno for about seven hours. Twenty-five firefighters were hospitalized with smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

This morning, firefighters remained on the scene to make sure there were no flare-ups at the fire-damaged businesses. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Officials say many of the damaged businesses will have to be torn down.
